| Administrative History | Colonel Henry Jackson Butchart (1882 - 1971) was Secretary and then Law Agent at Aberdeen University, from 1920 - 1952.
While completing his legal studies in Edinburgh, he joined the Royal Scots Volunteers, and in 1907 was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders, transferring later to the Scottish Horse Yeomanry. Following the outbreak of war in 1914 he was posted to the Expeditionary Force in Egypt and in 1916 was promoted Major, holding staff appointments as Divisional Intelligence Officer and as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quarter-Master General. He was transferred to France in 1918 where he served until his demobilization in 1919. Butchart received the DSO and Star of Roumania. The collection comprises: reports and instructional papers concerning campaigns, mainly in Palestine and Syria, 1917 - 1918; bundle of maps labelled " Egypt and Palestine " , with some manuscript notes, 1917 - 1918; bundle of European maps, with trench and other military details given, 1918. |
